Outdoor amenities like parks and rooftops are turning into all-year-round spaces in New York. With the COVID pandemic still a threat citizens are opting for fresh air to reduce the spread. As the weather drops closer to freezing, developers are now putting outdoor spaces made for warm seasons to year round use. Activities such as fitness classes, concerts, paint nights and gardening are only a few of the today’s new norm taking place at residential developments.
Waterline Square, the three-tower starchitect-designed mega-development, offers residents access to numerous outdoor activities planned through the in-house lifestyle director. The development located on the Upper West Side has a 2.6 acre park connecting all the buildings. The park is now home to many new COVID-friendly activities. Outdoor workouts are offered in the park with yoga and HIT trainers. There have also been performances by Grammy-nominated jazz musicians Pat Bianchi and Paul Jones’ jazz trio. Residents can also learn about gardening and planting with help to cultivate their own herbs.

Avora, a residential building at Port Imperial in New Jersey, offers outdoor activities on the Hudson River. The building has views of the Manhattan skyline with access to the Hudson River Promenade. Residents can walk or run along the Promenade and enjoy the beautiful views of the city. The Weehawken Waterfront Park is also nearby with a running track.

Many fitness companies have also partnered with development teams to continue operating outdoor and safely. Comeback Cycle is a socially-distanced outdoor cycling class on the rooftop of The Excelsior Building in Sutton Place. The Moxy East Village also hosts Barry’s Outdoors, a Barry’s Bootcamp workout without any shared equipment. The rooftop of Catch Steak and outdoors of WeWork in Chelsea also feature Rumble Outdoors, a signature boxing or strength Rumble workout in a socially-distant setting.
