Construction on the new Tvsdesign-designed 1.2 million SF expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Center is cruising along adjacent to the newly opened Hudson Yards mega-project. The expansion of the convention center which is located on Manhattan’s West Side will cost around $1.5 billion and will expand the existing facility to over 3.3 million SF. The addition will also include a 4-level, 655,000 SF truck garage with freight elevators and 27 loading docks, an atrium, 100K SF of exhibition space, 165K SF of conference rooms and 58K SF of what will be the largest ballroom on the United State’s east coast. The green roof will also be expanded to hold over 1,500 people. Construction and design is being overseen by a joint venture between Lendlease and Turner Construction Company. When complete the expansion is expected to generate over $393 million annually for the state’s economy and will create nearly 4,000 new jobs. Foundation work first began in December 2016 and completion is expected for 2021.
